Welcome to the Structural Racism Caucus

Understanding the persistence of racialized disparities in the resources and opportunities available to different communities requires a recognition that these disparities are not primarily a matter of attitudes, or of institutional practices, but rather are caused by a systemically uneven playing field.  From education financing to affordable housing, the interactions of public policy decisions in different areas come together to systematically block communities of color from the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.  This is structural racism.

While there are a great many organizations engaging in research, organizing and advocacy around racial justice issues, there are relatively few who employ a structural racism analysis to inform the work that they do.  In 2004, research and advocacy organizations working on developing a structural racism analysis formed the Structural Racism Caucus to further our common work.

The Structural Racism Caucus (SRC) focuses on research, messaging, and advocacy around structural racism. Our goals in forming the Caucus were:

(1) To bring together organizations for whom structural racism is a primary focus;

(2) To create a common space to refine our understandings of structural racism;

(3) To share research, provide a forum for critical analysis of this work, and formulate new research directions;

(4) To work collectively on strategies to communicate the idea of structural racism, and lay bare the harms it does to communities of color and society at large;

(5) To develop policy models and advocacy strategies to spur legal and social changes to end structural racism.
